Hero recalled that the original trip passed quickly. They crossed through the woods and approached a large waterway separating the Capital from the rest of Mu, and wasted more time waiting for the gate to clear than during the rest of the journey. It surprised him that Inoue rested so close to his kingdom and yet felt so far away until that moment. When they finally arrived, he jumped out over Kyou and cast an eye over his surroundings.
A forest of glowing crystal trees towered just beyond a gateway at the edge of the Centre. Most of the buildings and pathways consisted of carefully placed stones. In the distance, hundreds of small houses stood roof-to-roof all the way down the slope of the highland with the palace placed on top like a cake decoration. Despite the allotted space, the community clustered together in a bustle of tightly knit homes, shops and carts. A ring of shops traced the Centre with strings of tiny white lights as a plethora of people moved about their daily business.
Kyou stepped down from the carriage and placed his hands on Heroâs shoulders. He spoke with a sort of dramatic and deep voice that Hero found himself wishing to hear. âWelcome to Inoue, the Capital of the Empire.â
Inoue Comâs air smelled distinctly of salt, honey, and spices. The sound of the ocean waves swished through the Centre, and the entire place exuded a peculiar resonance of his lost clan. The slight sound of chimes mingled with the gentle breeze, creating a soothing lull. The chilled air and fine mist calmed Hero immensely. He breathed in the crisp scent and smiled at the sights before him. âIt feels like home.â
Kyou patted his back. âRight? I thought you would say that.â
Several guards stood around the gate to the woods. Some meandered over to greet Kyou but gawked at Hero instead. âPraise be! Is that Elaineâs son?â
Kyou shushed them. âIâm trying to surprise Chi! Donât ruin it!â
One of the soldiers whispered frantically, âI thought he couldnât leave the palace!â
âMy father was there. We happened to witness some of Niteoâs unsightly behavior.â
The soldier snarled. âUgh, that again? Not sure if I should call it lucky or unfortunate.â He beamed at Hero in acceptance. âWelcome to Inoue Com, kid! Go greet your aunt before she storms out here and skins us alive.â
âHide behind me,â Kyou said, pushing Hero back in excitement.
They toddled towards the right side of the Centre and into a cottage. As they made their entrance, a woman sprang out, startling Kyou. He shouted and his posterior end hit Heroâs face, much to his disapproval and alarm.
The white-haired woman cackled riotously, her armor jingling as she slapped a hand against her stomach. âOh, Kyou! You should have seen your face! I thought Cibul would enter, but this is even better!â
Kyou put a hand against his chest. âI brought you a surprise and this is how you repay me?â
âSurprise?â
He stepped aside and patted Heroâs head. âThis one.â
The white-haired woman breathed in sharply, her mint eyes welling with tears.
